Heaven in the Sangat

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਮ ॥
simar simar su-aamee parabh apunaa nikat na aavai jaam.
Remembering, remembering God, his Lord and Master in meditation, the Messenger of Death does not approach him.
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਧਾਮ ॥੧॥
mukat baikunth saaDh kee sangat jan paa-i-o har kaa Dhaam. ||1||
Liberation and heaven are found in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; his humble servant finds the home of the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

Remembering my dear One again and again, the old fear of death can't come near me anymore.

Freedom and heaven turn out to be right here in the Sangat — that is where a seeking heart finds the One's own home.

Heaven is here, in the Sangat, right now.
The deeper layer

You can find heaven right here, in the Sangat.

Simar simar... nikat na aavai jaam — as you keep remembering the One, the fear that people tie to death cannot come near you. The fear melts away. It is like a dark room where a scary shape turns out to be a coat once the light goes on.

Then comes a surprising line: mukat baikunth saaDh kee sangat. Mukat means freedom, and baikunth means heaven. Both are found in saaDh sangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. They are not only in some faraway place later. They are here, now.

The Sangat becomes har kaa Dhaam, the One's own home.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a group of people who make you feel completely at home? What makes it feel that way?
