In plain words

Out of everything I could ask the One for, I ask for just one gift.

Let me remember Your Naam. Then every wish of my heart comes true.

Ask for the One thing that quietly holds everything else.
The deeper layer

Ask for one gift, and it turns out to hold all the others.

This shabad opens with its Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Maaga-o raam tay ik daan — I ask the One for just one gift. Out of everything I could ask for, I make only one request.

Sagal manorath pooran hoveh — all my wishes are fulfilled. How? Keeping the Name is not one wish on a long list. It is the soil where every real wish is already met. Think of asking for the key instead of asking for each room. With the key, every door opens.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for only one gift, what would it be — and what does that reveal about what you want?
