May my mind not be afflicted by the fire of sorrow; may I sing Your Glorious Praises, twenty-four hours a day. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Let Your presence live right inside my heart, and let me find my place in the Sangat.

Then the fire of sorrow can never take over my mind, and all day and night I get to sing what is good in You.

The Sangat and the One's presence keep sorrow from taking over.
The deeper layer

Sorrow may come, but it does not have to take over.

Sog agan meh man na vi-aapai — the fire of sorrow does not take hold of the mind. Sorrow may still come. A heart rooted in the One's presence, and in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — is not overrun by it. It is like a tree with deep roots in a storm. The wind blows hard, and the tree stays standing.

Aath pahar means "all eight watches," the old way of counting a whole day and night. So the singing goes on all the time. It is not an occasional visit. It is more like a song you keep humming all day long.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people whose company keeps your heart steady?
