Wherever I Look

ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਹੁਚਨਹਾਰ ॥
jah jah daykh-a-u tah tah su-aamee ko-ay na pahuchanhaar.
Wherever I look, there I see my Lord and Master; no one can harm me.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਅਵਗਿਆ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਹੋਇ ਗਇਆ ਤਤ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥
jo jo karai avgi-aa jan kee ho-ay ga-i-aa tat chhaar. ||1||
Whoever shows disrespect to the Lord's humble servant, is instantly reduced to ashes. ||1||

In plain words

Wherever I turn my eyes, there is my One — and knowing that, I feel that nothing can reach in and harm me.

Whoever sets out to belittle a devoted heart only wears their own self down to nothing.

Seeing the One everywhere is what makes a heart unafraid.
The deeper layer

When you see the One everywhere, you stop being afraid.

Jah jah daykh-a-u tah tah su-aamee — wherever I look, there is my One. That is the ground of being unafraid. It is like a small child in a big, noisy place who can always see a parent nearby. Knowing someone is there changes everything.

The verse then says that whoever disrespects a devoted person is quickly "reduced to ashes." The meaning is that ill will burns itself out. The unkindness wears itself down to nothing. The verse is not asking anyone to wish harm on people.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you most easily notice that you are not alone?
