Verse 2 of 5

Untouched by the Fire of Sorrow

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਪੈ ॥
charan kamal jaa kaa man raapai.
One whose mind is imbued with the Lord's lotus feet
ਸੋਗ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥੨॥
sog agan tis jan na bi-aapai. ||2||
is not afflicted by the fire of sorrow. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When a heart is dyed deep in the beauty of the One,

the fire of sorrow cannot reach that person at all.

A heart soaked in one color can't easily be stained by sorrow.
The deeper layer

A heart soaked in love for the One cannot be burned by sorrow.

Charan kamal jaa kaa man raapai — a mind dyed in the One's lotus feet. Lotus feet is a loving way to speak of the One's presence. Raapai means dyed, soaked through with color.

The result: sog agan ... na bi-aapai. The fire of sorrow cannot take hold.

Dye is a picture Gurbani uses again and again. Think of a white T-shirt dipped deep in blue dye. Once it is soaked through, other colors do not easily take over. A heart soaked in love is like that.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love so deeply it steadies you when things go wrong?
