ਪਰ ਧਨ ਦੋਖ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਪ ਨ ਫੇੜੇ ॥
par Dhan dokh kichh paap na fayrhay.
One who does not steal the wealth of others, who does not commit evil deeds or sinful acts
ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨੇੜੇ ॥੪॥
jam jandaar na aavai nayrhay. ||4||
- the Messenger of Death does not even approach him. ||4||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Someone never takes what belongs to another. They do no harm and no wrong.
Even the fear of death cannot come near that heart.
A clean and gentle heart has nothing to fear.
A person who is honest and does no harm has nothing to fear.
Par Dhan dokh ... paap na fayrhay — not taking what belongs to others, and doing no wrong. That is the kind of life the verse describes.
The result is freedom from jam. In old stories, Jam is the messenger of death. Here it simply means the fear of death, and that fear cannot come near. Think of how easy it feels to walk into class when you know you did nothing wrong. A clean conscience makes a heart light.
A Question to Sit With
How does it feel inside when you know you've done right by others?
