jeevan har jap saaDhsang. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Spiritual life consists of chanting the Lord's Name in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Life itself is the One.
To live is to say the Naam in the Sangat.
To be alive is to say the Naam in the Sangat.
Real life is life lived with the One.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Jeevnaa har jeevnaa — living, living in the One. The word is said twice, the way you repeat something when you really mean it: this is what truly counts as being alive.
Jeevan har jap saaDhsang says where it happens: in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One, the whole room at the Gurdwara singing as one. Think of a campfire. One log on its own soon goes out. Many logs together keep each other burning.
