In plain words

The Guru's feet set the soul free.

In a single instant, they carry it across the whole wide ocean of the world.

True guidance can free you in a single instant.
The deeper layer

The Guide's presence can carry you across the whole ocean of life in a single moment.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Gur kay charan jee-a kaa nistaaraa — the Guru's feet set the soul free. Here "feet" means the Guru's living presence and word.

Khin meh taaraa — the crossing of the huge ocean happens "in an instant." This shows that grace does the work, more than long, hard struggle. Think of trying to swim across a lake, and then a friend pulls up in a boat and says, "Hop in."

A Question to Sit With

Has a few words from the right person ever changed something in an instant?
