The Lord's slaves meditate on His Name. ||1||

In plain words

Some pour their love into rituals, and some go to bathe at holy shrines.

And the ones devoted to the One hold the One's Name close in their hearts.

People walk many paths; the heart's Name is one of them.
The deeper layer

People walk different paths, and the devotee's path is keeping the Name close.

Ko-ee ho-aa karam rat ko-ee tirath naa-i-aa — some love rituals, and some bathe at holy places of pilgrimage. The verse names these paths fairly, with no mocking.

Next to them it places daasee har kaa naam Dhi-aa-i-aa: the devoted ones remember the One's Name inside. It is like classmates who each study in their own way. One reads, one draws, one talks it through. The verse simply shows the devotee's way. It is not used as a weapon against anyone's faith.

A Question to Sit With

How do you feel when you see someone reach the good in a way different from yours?
