Dearer Than Life Itself

ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਮਨ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
jee-a paraan man Dhan tay pi-aaraa.
He is more dear to me than my soul, my breath of life, my mind and my wealth.
ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧੁ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
ha-umai banDh har dayvanhaaraa. ||1||
The Lord is the Giver, the Restrainer of the ego. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is dearer to me than my own soul, my breath, my mind, and everything I own.

The One is the Giver — the One who gently steadies a restless, self-centered heart.

What you love most quietly steadies the rest of you.
The deeper layer

The One is dearer than anything we have.

jee-a paraan man Dhan tay pi-aaraa — dearer than my soul, my breath, my mind, and my wealth. Think of the thing you love most, the one you would save first. The One is dearer still.

ha-umai banDh har dayvanhaaraa — the One is the Giver who reins in ha-umai. Ha-umai is the feeling of being a separate, self-centered self. To rein it in means to steady it gently, like a hand on the shoulder of someone rushing ahead. It is steadied, not crushed.

A Question to Sit With

What do you love so much it changes how you act everywhere else?
