Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
You don't have to travel far to find something holy — the holiest place is right here, in remembering the One.
When I think deeply about the true teaching, a quiet knowing wakes up inside me, and that knowing is my sacred place. Every holy day is kept there, every day.
So I keep asking for the Naam, the way you ask for something you need: give it to me, You who hold up the whole world.
The world can feel sick and tired, and remembering the One is the medicine. The teaching shines like a steady light, and I can wash myself clean in it any day, without going anywhere.
The truest holy place to visit is the Name, right inside you.
The shabad opens with the mangal, the short blessing at the start: One Creator, known by the true Guru's grace. Then Guru Nanak begins. Tirath naavan jaa-o tirath naam hai — why go and bathe at a holy place? The tirath, the place of pilgrimage, is the Name. A pilgrimage is a trip to a holy place. Guru Nanak turns the whole idea of holy travel inward.
Sansaar rogee naam daaroo — the world is sick, and the Name is its medicine. It is like a first-aid kit you always carry. You don't have to travel to find it.
Gur vaak nirmal sadaa chaanan — the Guru's Word is pure, a steady light. You can bathe in it every day, and no journey is needed.
Where do you already feel calm and clear inside, a place you don't have to travel to reach?
