Come Home to Your Own Heart

boodee ghar ghaali-o gur kai bhaa-ay chalo.
You have drowned, and your house is ruined; walk in the Way of the Guru's Will.
saachaa naam Dhi-aa-ay paavahi sukh mahlo.
Meditate on the True Name, and you shall find peace in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
har naam Dhi-aa-ay taa sukh paa-ay pay-ee-arhai din chaaray.
Meditate on the Lord's Name, and you shall find peace; your stay in this world shall last only four days.
nij ghar jaa-ay bahai sach paa-ay an-din naal pi-aaray.
Sit in the home of your own being, and you shall find Truth; night and day, be with your Beloved.
Without loving devotion, you cannot dwell in your own home - listen, everyone!
naanak sarsee taa pir paa-ay raatee saachai naa-ay. ||2||
O Nanak, she is happy, and she obtains her Husband Lord, if she is attuned to the True Name. ||2||

In plain words

Even if you feel swept off your feet and lost, there's a way back — the path the teaching shows.

Hold the True Name, and you'll find a calm that feels like coming home to a warm room inside you.

Our time here is short, like a visit of just a few days, so it's worth finding that calm now.

Sit quietly in the home of your own heart, and you'll find what's real, with the One close by, day and night. Everyone, listen: that peace grows from love.

The calm you're looking for is a room inside your own heart.
The deeper layer

Real peace is found at home, inside your own heart.

Nij ghar jaa-ay bahai — go and sit in the home of your own being. Nij ghar means your own innermost home. The peace Guru Nanak points to is not in some faraway mansion. It is like the calm of your own room after a long, noisy day. It was there all along, waiting for you to come in.

Pay-ee-arhai din chaaray — our stay in this world is just "four days," a short visit. This is a gentle reminder to turn toward home now. It is said with care, not to make us afraid.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel like you've come home to yourself?
