Love Makes You Beautiful

pir Dhan bhaavai taa pir bhaavai naaree jee-o.
If the soul-bride is pleasing to her Husband Lord, then the Husband Lord will love His bride.
rang pareetam raatee gur kai sabad veechaaree jee-o.
Imbued with the love of her Beloved, she contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
gur sabad veechaaree naah pi-aaree niv niv bhagat karay-ee.
She contemplates the Guru's Shabads, and her Husband Lord loves her; in deep humility, she worships Him in loving devotion.
maa-i-aa moh jalaa-ay pareetam ras meh rang karay-ee.
She burns away her emotional attachment to Maya, and in love, she loves her Beloved.
parabh saachay saytee rang rangaytee laal bha-ee man maaree.
She is imbued and drenched with the Love of the True Lord; she has become beautiful, by conquering her mind.

O Nanak, the happy soul-bride abides in Truth; she loves to love her Husband Lord. ||3||

In plain words

When your heart turns toward the One with love, that love comes flowing right back to you.

Filled with it, you think about the teaching and let it settle deep.

With a humble, open heart, your attachment to shiny passing things loosens its grip and burns away.

Colored through and through with love for what's real, you become beautiful, not on the outside, but in the quiet way you've made peace with your own mind. Nanak says: such a heart lives in what is true, and loves the Beloved dearly.

Love that you give to the One comes flowing right back, and it makes you beautiful inside.
The deeper layer

When love fills the heart, it changes its color and makes it beautiful.

Rang rangaytee laal bha-ee — the heart is dyed and soaked until it turns deep red, the color of love. Think of a white T-shirt dropped into a bucket of red dye. It comes out red all the way through, not just on the surface.

The beauty Guru Nanak describes is not about looks. It is man maaree, a restless mind that has settled down. Maa-i-aa moh jalaa-ay — in that love, the pull of Maya, the glittering world that passes, burns away.

A Question to Sit With

When have you noticed that giving love brought more of it back to you?
