In plain words

O my mind, reach toward the One who lacks nothing at all.

The One has no emptiness inside, and so can never run short of anything you need.

Reach toward the One who lacks nothing — because the One who is full can never run short for you.
The deeper layer

Tell your mind to reach for the One who lacks nothing. The One who is full can never run out.

This shabad by Guru Arjan speaks to the man, one's own mind. Gurbani often does this. It is a gentle way to give yourself good advice. Ray man mayray too taa ka-o aahi — O my mind, long for that One. Jaa kai oonaa kachhhoo naahi — in whom nothing at all is lacking.

The reasoning is simple and comforting. Reach toward the One who is complete, because the complete One never runs dry. We often reach for things and people that are needy or passing themselves. Think of filling your water bottle from a tiny puddle when a spring is right beside you. Here the mind is turned toward the one Source that is full and cannot be emptied.

A Question to Sit With

When you need something important, do you reach toward what's steady and full, or what's shaky and might run out?
