Make the Beloved One your closest friend, my mind. Keep the One always in your thoughts — that is the support of your very breath.
Make the One your dearest friend, and keep that friend in your thoughts all the time.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line and the center of the shabad. Har saa pareetam kar man meet — O mind, make the Beloved your friend. The One is not a distant power here. The One is pareetam, the Beloved, and meet, a friend.
The practice is simple. Raakho sad cheet — keep the One always in mind. Why? The One is paraan aDhaar, the support of the breath of life.
Being friends with the One is naam simran, remembering the Name, described as closeness. Think of a best friend you think about even when they are far away. Keeping someone dear in your thoughts, always, is what this remembering feels like.
Who do you keep in your thoughts even when they're not around — and what does that friendship give you?
