Give Yourself to the Endless, Not the Passing

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਸੇਵਿ ॥
ray man mayray tooN taa ka-o sayv.
O my mind, serve Him;
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਦੇਵ ॥੨॥
aad purakh aprampar dayv. ||2||
He is the Primal Being, the Infinite Divine Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, give yourself to serving the One.

The One is the very first Being, with no beginning and no end, beyond anything we can measure.

Give your energy to what is first and endless, not to what passes.
The deeper layer

Give your time and care to the One who is first and endless, not to things that pass.

Ray man mayray too taa ka-o sayv — O my mind, serve that One. Aad purakh aprampar dayv — the First Being, the endless Divine. Aad means first, before everything. Aprampar means beyond all limits.

The mind is told where to put its energy. Sayv means service, loving attention. Give it not to passing things but to the One who is first and lasting. Think of planting a tree instead of drawing in chalk just before the rain.

Service here does not mean being a servant by force. It is the natural giving of yourself to what is most worthy and most lasting.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you spend most of your energy — and is it on things that last or things that fade?
