Anchor Your Hopes in the One Steady From the Start

ਤਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨ ਕਰਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਸਾ ॥

Place your hopes in the One

who is the Support of all beings, from the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Rest all your hopes on the One, my mind.

The One has been the support of everything from the very beginning of time, and through every age.

Anchor your hopes in the One that has held everything steady since the very beginning.
The deeper layer

Anchor your hopes in the One who has held everything steady since the very beginning.

Tis oopar man kar too aasaa — O mind, place your hope in that One. Aasaa means hope. Aad jugaad jaa kaa bharvaasaa — the One whose support has held from the beginning, through all the ages. Aad means the very beginning. Jugaad means through every yug, every age of the world. It shows how trustworthy the One is across all time.

So the advice is about where to anchor hope. Not in things that come and go, but in the One who has always held everything. Think of a boat's anchor. It holds because it is fixed to the seabed, not to the waves. Hope placed there is not let down by change.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you can count on so completely that it makes your hopes feel safe?
