My Friend Needs Nothing; the Friendship Is Free

ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥
meet hamaaraa vayparvaahaa.
My Friend is Carefree.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਸਨਾਹਾ ॥੨॥
gur kirpaa tay mohi asnaahaa. ||2||
By Guru's Grace, I give my love to Him. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My Friend is completely carefree, needing nothing.

By the Guru's grace, my love simply flows toward that One.

My Friend needs nothing from me — and even my love is a gift — so the friendship is completely free.
The deeper layer

This one says the Friend needs nothing from us, so the friendship is completely free.

Meet hamaaraa vayparvaahaa — "my Friend is carefree." Vayparvaah means without worry and without need.

Gur kirpaa tay mohi asnaahaa — "by the Guru's grace, I love Him." Even the love is a gift. I do not make it myself. It comes by grace, what Sikhs call Gurprasad, the Guru's kindness.

This brings a deep ease. The Friend needs nothing from me. So there is no nervous deal-making, no "I'll do this if You do that." Think of a friend who is happy just to see you, and not for what you bring.

And my own love for the Friend also arrives as a gift. Love that neither side has to earn is the freest love there is.

A Question to Sit With

How is it freeing to love someone who doesn't need anything from you in return?
