ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
kaho naanak ih tat beechaaraa.
Says Nanak, this is the essence of Truth:
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ॥੩॥੪੪॥੧੧੩॥
bin har bhajan naahee chhutkaaraa. ||3||44||113||
without the Lord's meditation, there is no salvation. ||3||44||113||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Here is the heart of it: real freedom does not come from more stuff. It comes from turning toward the One with love. That is what actually sets you free.
Real freedom comes from loving connection, not from having more.
The closing couplet, and (because this is a 3-verse shabad) the resolution. Ih tat beechaaraa -- 'this is the essence I have reflected on.' Bin har bhajan naahee chhutkaaraa -- without loving remembrance, no real release. The shabad lands where it aimed: freedom is inward, found in loving connection, not in the greatness the world counts.
A Question to Sit With
What is something that made you feel free that had nothing to do with owning anything?
