Verse 3 of 5

As the Me Deflates, the Oneness Becomes Visible

ਸੰਤ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
sant kai sang miti-aa ahaNkaar.
In the Society of the Saints, egotism is shed,
ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਆਵੈ ਸਭੁ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
darisat aavai sabh aykankaar. ||2||
and the One Lord is seen everywhere. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In the company of the good, the puffed-up feeling of 'me, me, me' quietly goes flat.

And then, everywhere you look, you start to see the same One shining through everything.

As the puffed-up 'me' deflates, the one Oneness in everything becomes visible.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says that among good people, the puffed-up "me" goes flat, and then you see the One everywhere.

Sant kai sang miti-aa ahankaar: in the company of the good, ahankaar fades away. Ahankaar is pride, the swollen feeling of being a separate, special self. It is one face of ha-umai, the ego. Darisat aavai sabh aykankaar: then the One comes into view, everywhere.

These two go together. Think of a big balloon blocking your view of the stage. As the air goes out of it, you can see the show. As the feeling of being separate shrinks, the oneness under everything shows through.

A Question to Sit With

When has getting over yourself let you notice something beautiful you had been missing?
