Verse 4 of 5

Good Company Settles the Wild Pulls Within

ਸੰਤ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਆਏ ਵਸਿ ਪੰਚਾ ॥
sant suparsan aa-ay vas panchaa.
By the pleasure of the Saints, the five passions are overpowered,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਲੈ ਸੰਚਾ ॥੩॥
amrit naam ridai lai sanchaa. ||3||
and the heart is irrigated with the Ambrosial Naam. ||3||

In plain words

Through the kindness of the good, the five wild pulls inside you settle down.

And the heart drinks in the Name, like a dry field soaking up sweet water.

Good company helps the wild pulls inside settle, and the heart drinks in what nourishes it.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says the kindness of good people calms the five wild pulls inside us, and the Name waters the heart.

Sant suparsan aa-ay vas panchaa: when the good are pleased, the panch, the five, come under control. The five are craving, anger, greed, clinging and pride. They are the pulls that make a heart restless and dry. Amrit naam ridai lai sanchaa: the heart is watered with the Name. Amrit means nectar, the sweet water of life.

Picture a garden in a long, hot summer. The soil cracks. Then the hose comes on, and the ground drinks and drinks. Remembering the One waters an inner life that the restless five had dried out.

A Question to Sit With

What is one of the strong feelings that pulls you around -- and what helps it settle down?
