The Wisest Thing a Mind Can Do Is Praise

ਸਾ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
saa mat pooree jit har gun gaavai.
Perfect is that intellect, by which the Glorious Praises of the Lord are sung.
ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
vadai bhaag saaDhoo sang paavai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By great good fortune, one finds the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The wisest a mind can be is when it sings the praises of the One. And by great good fortune, such a mind finds its way into the company of the good, where that song grows louder.

The wisest thing a mind can do is turn toward praise.
The deeper layer

The Rahao. Saa mat pooree jit har gun gaavai -- that understanding is perfect which sings the One's praise. Saadhoo sang -- the company of the holy. The pause line redefines wisdom: not cleverness (see 367), but the heart's turning toward praise. And such wisdom naturally seeks out good company.

A Question to Sit With

What do you think is smarter -- being clever, or being the kind of person others want around?
