Come Empty-Handed and the Highest Peace Is Found

ਸਭ ਤਜਿ ਅਨਾਥੁ ਏਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਆਇਓ ॥
sabh taj anaath ayk saran aa-i-o.
I have renounced all - I am an orphan. I have come to the Sanctuary of the One Lord.
ਊਚ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ਤਬ ਸਹਜੇ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੩॥
ooch asthaan tab sehjay paa-i-o. ||3||
Since then, I have found the highest celestial home. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I let go of leaning on everything else and came, empty-handed, to shelter in the One. And right there, without any strain, I found the highest, most peaceful home.

Coming empty-handed to shelter, the highest peace is found with no strain at all.
The deeper layer

Sabh taj anaath ayk saran aa-i-o -- renouncing all, I came to the One's shelter. The original anaath (orphan) we render as coming empty-handed -- turning self-abasement into openness toward grace (guidelines). Ooch asthaan tab sehjay paa-i-o -- I found the highest home naturally, in sahaj (effortless ease). Letting go of props is what let the ease arrive.

A Question to Sit With

What might you feel if you stopped leaning on everything you usually rely on, and just rested?
