Rest in Leaning on Something Steady

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਛਾਡਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਬਹੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
chhaad si-aanap baho chaturaa-ee.
Renounce your cleverness, and your cunning tricks.
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕਾਈ ॥੧॥
gur pooray kee tayk tikaa-ee. ||1||
Seek the Support of the Perfect Guru. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Set down your cleverness and your clever little tricks for a while. Lean instead on the complete teacher, and let yourself be held. There is rest in not having to outsmart everything.

There is rest in leaning on something steady instead of outsmarting everything.
The deeper layer

Chhaad si-aanap baho chaturaa-ee -- set aside cleverness and cunning. Gur pooray kee tayk tikaa-ee -- lean on the support of the perfect teacher. Guru Arjan's counsel is not against thinking but against self-reliant cleverness in place of the teacher's support — which a contemporary reader may recognise as the exhausting compulsion to control everything by wit. Tayk is a support to rest against. Compare 361: real wisdom is the heart's turning, not mental scheming.

A Question to Sit With

When has trying to be clever about everything just worn you out?
