ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥
anad bha-ay gur milat kirpaal.
Meeting with the Merciful Guru, I am in ecstasy.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਾਟੇ ਜਮ ਜਾਲ ॥੩॥
kar kirpaa kaatay jam jaal. ||3||
Showering His Mercy, He has cut away the noose of the Messenger of Death. ||3||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Meeting the kind teacher, joy welled up in me. That kindness cut away the very thing I most feared -- and the dread that had shadowed me let go.
Kindness can cut away the very thing you most fear.
The closing couplet's setup. Anad bha-ay gur milat kirpaal -- meeting the merciful teacher, bliss arose. Kaatay jam jaal -- the noose of the death-messenger is cut. Per wellbeing rules we soften the death-messenger terror into 'the very thing I most feared' -- the shabad's own point is release from fear, and we let that dominate.
A Question to Sit With
What is a fear that got smaller when someone kind helped you face it?
