The Complete Teacher Steadies You

Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਆਪਿ ॥

The Perfect Guru Himself has saved me.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਉ ਲਾਗੋ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ॥੧॥
manmukh ka-o laago santaap. ||1||
The self-willed manmukhs are afflicted with misfortune. ||1||

In plain words

The complete teacher stepped in and steadied me. And when a person insists on facing only their own small self, they end up carrying a heaviness they did not have to.

The complete teacher steadies you; facing only your small self just makes life heavier.
The deeper layer

Raakh lee-aa gur poorai aap -- the perfect teacher Himself saved me. Manmukh ka-o laago santaap -- the manmukh (self-facing person) is troubled. Per guidelines we render manmukh gently -- not a villain but someone who insists on facing only the small separate self, and so carries needless heaviness. The teacher's saving is the bright contrast.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between figuring everything out alone and letting someone wise help you?
