A Wise Path Held Close Disarms What Opposes You

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਾਇ ॥
gur kay charan hirdai vasaa-ay.
Enshrine the Feet of the Guru within your heart;
ਦੁਖ ਦੁਸਮਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਹਤੈ ਬਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
dukh dusman tayree hatai balaa-ay. ||2||
your pains, enemies and bad luck shall be destroyed. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Keep the teacher's footsteps in your heart -- the path of the wise close to you. Then pain, and whatever works against you, and plain bad luck all lose their power over you.

Keeping a wise path close to your heart takes the power out of what works against you.
The deeper layer

Gur kay charan hirdai vasaa-ay -- enshrine the teacher's feet in the heart. Dukh dusman tayree hatai balaa-ay -- pain, enemies, misfortune are destroyed. The original balaa-ay (evil/bad luck) is kept mild as 'plain bad luck.' Holding the teacher's path close is presented as protection -- not a spell, but the strength of a heart with steady direction.

A Question to Sit With

Whose good example do you keep close in your heart when things get hard?
