Verse 4 of 5

Calm Floods the Space the Pain Left Behind

ਦੁਖ ਨਾਠੇ ਸੁਖ ਆਇ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
dukh naathay sukh aa-ay samaa-ay.
Pain is driven far away, and peace comes in its place;
ਢੀਲ ਨ ਪਰੀ ਜਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਏ ॥੩॥
dheel na paree jaa gur furmaa-ay. ||3||
there is no delay, when the Guru gives the Order. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The pain that pressed on me was sent far away, and calm came flooding in to fill its place. There was no waiting, no delay, once the word was given.

When calm comes, it does not trickle in — it floods the space the pain left behind.
The deeper layer

When the Guru speaks, pain leaves and peace rushes in to fill its place, right away.

Dukh naathay sukh aa-ay samaa-ay — pain runs far away, and peace comes in and fills the space. Dukh means pain, and sukh means peace.

The striking words are dheel na paree — there is no delay. Jaa gur furmaa-ay — once the Guru gives the word. It is the moment Hukam, the flow of existence, turns toward you.

Peace does not trickle in. It arrives all at once, the way light fills a room the moment you open the curtains.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like if calm rushed in the moment your worry left?
