Deep Calm Is Poured Over You, Not Won

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਤਾਪ ਗਏ ਪਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ॥
taap ga-ay paa-ee parabh saaNt.
The fever has departed; God has showered us with peace and tranquility.
ਸੀਤਲ ਭਏ ਕੀਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੧॥
seetal bha-ay keenee parabh daat. ||1||
A cooling peace prevails; God has granted this gift. ||1||

In plain words

The fever broke. A deep calm settled over me, poured out like a gift I did not have to earn. Everything cooled and grew peaceful, because peace itself was given.

Deep calm is something poured over you as a gift, not something you have to win.
The deeper layer

This one says deep calm comes as a gift, not a prize you win.

Taap ga-ay paa-ee parabh saaNt — the fever is gone, and the One has given saaNt, peace. Seetal bha-ay keenee parabh daat — everything has cooled, because the One gave this daat, gift. Seetal means cool. The burning is over.

Twice the verse says this was given. That keeps us from thinking we made ourselves calm by trying hard.

Think of a hot, stuffy afternoon when a cool breeze suddenly comes through the window. You did not make the breeze. You just feel it. Peace here is grace arriving, not a prize won.

A Question to Sit With

When has a calm come over you that felt more like a gift than something you made happen?
