Verse 5 of 5

A Heart Full of Song Gives Fear No Place to Settle

ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
dookh darad jam nayrh na aavai.
Pain, suffering and the Messenger of Death do not even approach that one,
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੪॥੫੯॥੧੨੮॥
kaho naanak jo har gun gaavai. ||4||59||128||
says Nanak, who sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||59||128||

In plain words

For the one who sings the praises of the One, trouble and sorrow keep their distance, and even the fear of endings loses its grip. A heart full of song is not an easy place for dread to settle.

A heart full of song is not an easy place for fear and sorrow to settle.
The deeper layer

This one says that a heart full of song leaves no room for fear to settle.

Dookh darad jam nayrh na aavai — dookh, pain, and darad, sorrow, do not come near. Even jam, the messenger of death, keeps away. In other words, even the fear of endings loses its grip.

Who is this for? Kaho naanak jo har gun gaavai — says Nanak, the one who sings the goodness of the One.

The point is simple. Song fills the space where dread would otherwise live. Think of humming a tune while walking home after dark. The dark is still there, but the fear has less room.

A Question to Sit With

What song or thought fills you up so completely that worry cannot squeeze in?
