The Holy People chant the Lord's Name with their tongues. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, sing the words that belong to the One who fills the whole universe. The good and true people have always spoken that Name aloud with joy.

Sing what the good have always joyfully sung: the Name of the One who fills everything.
The deeper layer

Sing the words of the One, the way good people always have.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Jap man mayray govind kee banee — O my mind, sing the Bani, the holy words, of Govind, the Lord of the universe.

Saadhoo jan raam rasan vakhaanee — the holy people say the Name with their tongues.

Here the Guru talks to his own mind. Man mayray means "O my mind." It is a gentle note to himself. He points the mind toward what good people have always done with joy. Think of joining a choir that has been singing for hundreds of years. The moment you open your mouth, you belong to a long, warm company.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good people have done for ages that you would like to join in?
