Verse 3 of 5

No Second to the One; Under Its Glance, Peace

ਇਕਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਇ ॥
ikas bin naahee doojaa ko-ay.
Without the One Lord, there is no other at all.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
jaa kee darisat sadaa sukh ho-ay. ||2||
By His Glance of Grace, eternal peace is obtained. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Apart from the One, there is nothing and no one else. And under that One's glance of grace, a lasting peace is always there for you to find.

There is no second to the One, and the shabad places lasting peace under its glance of grace.
The deeper layer

There is only the One, and when the One looks on us with grace, peace comes to stay.

Ikas bin naahee doojaa ko-ay — without the One, there is no second at all. This is Oneness said straight out. Ik means One. It is not one god among many. It is the only thing that is truly real.

Jaa kee darisat sadaa sukh ho-ay — under that One's glance, there is peace. Darisat is a glance, a loving look. Sukh is peace, and sadaa means always.

The shabad sings of this peace as a gift of grace. It is not a promise we hold in our pocket ahead of time. Think of a parent smiling at you across a crowded room. That one look makes you feel safe, and it is given freely.

A Question to Sit With

What changes when you imagine there is really only one thing behind everything?
