Write His Name Where It Will Never Rub Out

ਸਾਜਨੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਸਖਾ ਕਰਿ ਏਕੁ ॥
saajan meet sakhaa kar ayk.
Make the One Lord your friend, intimate and companion.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਖਰ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਲੇਖੁ ॥੩॥
har har akhar man meh laykh. ||3||
Write in your mind the Word of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Make the One your friend, your closest companion, the one you turn to. And write the Name into your mind the way you would carve a name you never want to forget.

Make the One your closest friend and write its Name where it will never rub out.
The deeper layer

Make the One your best friend, and write the Name where it will never rub out.

Saajan meet sakhaa kar ayk — make the One your friend, your companion, your closest one. Three warm words for friendship are stacked up here: saajan, meet, and sakhaa. It is like saying "friend, buddy, best friend" all at once.

Har har akhar man meh laykh — write the Name of the One in your mind. Laykh means writing, even carving.

This is not a passing thought that floats away. It is a name carved where it lasts. Think of initials carved into a tree trunk. Rain and years go by, and the letters are still there.

A Question to Sit With

Who is the friend whose name you would never want to forget — and why?
