Verse 3 of 5

A Steadiness Underneath Holds You Through It All

ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖ ਮਹਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
sog harakh meh aavan jaanaa.
In pleasure and in pain, the world is coming and going in reincarnation.
ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੨॥
tin sukh paa-i-aa jo parabh bhaanaa. ||2||
Those who are pleasing to God, find peace. ||2||

In plain words

In good moods and hard ones, the world keeps swinging back and forth, coming and going. But the ones who move gently with the flow of the One find a steady peace inside the swings.

Moods swing and circumstances turn, but a steadiness underneath can hold you through them.
The deeper layer

Life swings between happy and sad, but a steady calm underneath can hold you through it all.

Sog harakh meh aavan jaanaa — in sorrow and in joy, there is coming and going. Tin sukh paa-i-aa jo parabh bhaanaa — those who are in tune with the One find peace.

The "coming and going" has long been read as being born and dying, again and again. Alongside that, it also fits the everyday swings of our moods and our days. One minute you win the game; the next you lose your favorite pen.

Either way, the peace here is sahaj, a deep inner steadiness. It is like the bottom of a lake, still and quiet while the waves roll on top. The swings cannot shake it.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady inside when your moods swing high and low?
