The Best Gift to Ask: to Keep Remembering

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਨੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
kar kirpaa parabh apnee daat.
O God, grant Your Grace, and give me this gift.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੬੫॥੧੩੪॥
naanak naam japai din raat. ||4||65||134||
Please, let Nanak chant Your Name, day and night. ||4||65||134||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Grant me your grace, O One — give me this one gift: that I may keep your Name in mind, through the day and through the night.

The best gift to ask for is simply the ability to keep remembering what matters.
The deeper layer

The last line is a simple prayer: please let me keep remembering You.

Kar kirpaa — be kind and give Your grace. Grace is a gift from the One that we do not earn. Naanak naam japai din raat — let Nanak remember the Name, day and night.

Look at what Guru Arjan asks for. Not success. Not safety. He asks for the remembering itself. It is like asking a coach, not for a trophy, but for the strength to keep practicing. And even the power to keep remembering is a gift. So this prayer is grace asking for more grace.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for one good habit and truly receive it, what would you ask for?
