Verse 3 of 5

When Mercy Touches, Humility Comes Easy

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
jaa ka-o bha-ay kirpaal gusaa-ee.
Those humble beings, unto whom the Lord of the Universe shows mercy,
ਸੇ ਜਨ ਲਾਗੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥
say jan laagay gur kee paa-ee. ||2||
fall at the Guru's Feet. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When mercy touches someone, something softens in them. They bow — humbly, gladly — before the teaching that can guide them home.

When mercy touches you, humility becomes easy and the teaching can reach you.
The deeper layer

When kindness touches us, bowing comes naturally.

Jaa ka-o bha-ay kirpaal gusaa-ee — those to whom the Lord of the world shows mercy. Kirpaal means kind and merciful. Say jan laagay gur kee paa-ee — those people fall at the Guru's feet.

Mercy comes first. The bowing is the answer to it. Bowing here is not losing. It is what a heart does after it has felt grace.

Think of a student who finally sees how much a teacher cares. They lean in and listen. Humility means being open, and being open is how we learn.

A Question to Sit With

When has feeling cared for made it easier for you to listen and learn?
