Verse 4 of 5

A Life Centered on the One Becomes Whole

ਜੀਵਨ ਮਰਣੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥
jeevan maran janam parvaan.
Redeemed is the life, death and birth of those,
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
jaa kai ridai vasai bhagvaan. ||3||
within whose hearts the Lord God abides. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some people have the One living in their heart.

For them, every part of life, from beginning to end, becomes worthwhile and whole.

A life with the One at its center becomes whole and worthwhile, all the way through.
The deeper layer

When the One lives at the center of a life, the whole life becomes worthwhile, from start to finish.

Jeevan maran janam parvaan — life, death and birth are all parvaan. Parvaan means accepted, approved, made worthwhile. Jaa kai ridai vasai bhagvaan — for the one in whose heart the One lives.

The verse does not dwell on death or make it scary. Its focus is on wholeness.

Think of a wheel with a strong hub in the middle. Every spoke, from the top of the wheel to the bottom, holds together because of that center.

A life rooted in the One is made whole not by skipping any of its stages. It is made whole by being lived from a true center.

A Question to Sit With

What would make you feel that a day was truly worthwhile, not just busy?
