No Pile of Mistakes Is Beyond Mercy

ਬਧੇ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਲਿਖੇ ਬਹੁ ਕਾਗਰ ॥
baDhay bikaar likhay baho kaagar.
Their wickedness and corruption have increased - they are recorded in volumes of books.
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਧਰੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ॥੪॥
naanak uDhar kirpaa sukh saagar. ||4||
O Nanak, they are saved only by the Mercy of God, the Ocean of peace. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Even when the missteps have piled high, page after page, no one is beyond reach. The One is an ocean of peace, and one drop of that mercy is enough to lift you and carry you home.

No pile of mistakes is beyond mercy; grace is an ocean, and one drop lifts you home.
The deeper layer

This one says that no pile of mistakes is too big for mercy.

BaDhay bikaar likhay baho kaagar — the wrongs have grown, written down on page after page. That could sound scary, like a report card covered in red marks. But Guru Arjan turns at once to rescue.

Naanak uDhar kirpaa sukh saagar — Nanak says we are lifted out by the mercy of the One, the ocean of peace. The whole long list is answered by one word: mercy. No account is too long for grace to wipe clean. Hope gets the last word.

A Question to Sit With

When you've messed up more than once, what does it feel like to be forgiven anyway?
