In plain words

Some people first reach for the One only to get something they want.

The One meets them anyway. It fills all their wishes, and then gives something bigger they never thought to ask for: real freedom.

Even a self-interested turn toward the One is met — and answered with more than you asked.
The deeper layer

This one says that even when we come to the One for selfish reasons, the One gives more than we asked.

apnay lobh ka-o keeno meet — people make the One their friend for their own gain. Lobh means wanting something for yourself.

Guru Arjan is very generous here. He does not scold. Even a self-interested turn toward the One is honored. The answer is sagal manorath, all the heart's wishes met. And then something much bigger: mukat pad, the state of being truly free.

Think of a child who visits Grandma only for the cookies. She gives the cookies. Then she gives a hug, a story and a whole afternoon of love.

Grace gives more than we know how to ask for.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever gone looking for a small thing and found something much bigger and better?
