Verse 3 of 5

Take the One to Heart and Inner Aches Dissolve

ਅਪੁਨੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਰਿਦੈ ਲੈ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥
apunai su-aa-ay ridai lai Dhaari-aa.
For their own purposes, they enshrine the Lord in the heart;
ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਰੋਗ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਆ ॥੨॥
dookh darad rog sagal bidaari-aa. ||2||
all pain, suffering and disease are taken away. ||2||

In plain words

Some take the One to heart for their own reasons at first.

Even so, their pain and sorrow and every inner ache break apart and dissolve.

Take the One to heart, and inner aches begin to dissolve — imperfect motives and all.
The deeper layer

This one says that when we hold the One in our heart, even for our own reasons, the aches begin to heal.

apunai su-aa-ay ridai lai Dhaari-aa — for their own purpose, they keep the One in their heart. Again the verse is honest. The turning may start from wanting something.

Yet the fruit is real. dookh darad rog sagal bidaari-aa — all pain, sorrow and sickness are torn away. Gurbani often calls inner suffering rog, an illness that can be healed.

Think of a bandage. It helps a cut heal whether you put it on bravely or while crying. The healing does not wait for perfect motives.

A Question to Sit With

Does a good habit still help you even if you started it for a slightly selfish reason?
