The Name Is the One Food That Quiets the Hunger

ਪੀਵਤ ਰਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਣ ਜਾਸੁ ॥

They drink in the sublime essence of the Lord's Name, the Ambrosial Elixir.
ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਮਿਟੀ ਖੁਧਿ ਤਾਸੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jap har charan mitee khuDh taas. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Meditating on the Lord's Feet, hunger is taken away. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

They drink in the sweetness of the One's Name, its nectar-like goodness.

Remembering the One's feet, the restless hunger inside goes quiet, satisfied at last.

The Name is the one food that finally quiets the restless inner hunger.
The deeper layer

The Name is the one food that fills the hunger inside us.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Peevat raam ras amrit — they drink the sweet nectar of the Name. Amrit is nectar, the drink that gives life.

Then the promise: mitee khuDh taas — their hunger is wiped away. KhuDh here is a hunger deep inside. It is the wanting that never gets full. Think of scrolling a phone for something new, again and again, and never feeling done. More stuff does not fill that hunger. The Name does.

A Question to Sit With

What is a "hunger" inside you that no amount of stuff ever seems to fill?
