In plain words

All day and all night, a band of inner robbers used to travel with me — the sneaky pulls that steal my peace. Then grace stepped in and quietly sent them on their way.

The pulls that steal your peace ride with you all day — and grace can send them off.
The deeper layer

Grace sends away the inner robbers that ride along with us, stealing our peace.

Aath pahar sangee batvaaray — all day and night, the highway robbers are my companions. Aath pahar means the eight watches of the day: all twenty-four hours. Guru Arjan pictures our inner troublemakers as bandits riding right alongside us. They are craving, anger, greed and pride. They rob our peace all day long. Think of apps running in the background on a phone. You don't see them, but they drain the battery.

The rescue comes in the next line. Kar kirpaa parabh la-ay nivaaray — in grace, the One drove them away. Kirpaa is grace, kindness freely given.

These robbers are feelings inside us that grace can clear. They are not people to be afraid of.

A Question to Sit With

What is an inner "robber" — a feeling or habit — that quietly steals your calm?
