Singing Together Is a Gift You Receive

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
vadbhaagee har keertan gaa-ee-ai.
By great good fortune, the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises are sung.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paarbarahm tooN deh ta paa-ee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O Supreme Lord God, as You give, so do I receive. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What a fortunate thing it is to sing the praises of the One together. And whatever You give me, that is exactly what I receive — so I open my hands and trust Your giving.

Singing together is a gift, and what you receive is simply what the One gives.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line, the center of the shabad. It says two things: singing praise is a great blessing, and even that blessing is a gift.

Vadbhaagee har keertan gaa-ee-ai — by great good fortune we sing keertan. Keertan is singing the praises of the One. The second line is pure trust: deh ta paa-ee-ai — as You give, so I receive.

Even being able to sing and remember is a present, not a prize. It is like a gift left on your pillow. You did not make it. You only get to open it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good in your life that came to you as a gift rather than something you earned?
