Verse 3 of 5

Keep the One Close; That Is the Boat Across

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
har kay charan hirdai ur Dhaar.
Enshrine the Lord's Feet within your heart.
ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਚੜਿ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
bhav saagar charh utreh paar. ||2||
Get aboard this boat, and cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Hold the nearness of the One close in your heart.

Climb aboard that steady boat, and you will cross safely over the wide, wild sea of the world.

Keep the One close in your heart — that is the boat that carries you safely across.
The deeper layer

Keep the One close in your heart, and that nearness becomes a boat that carries you across.

Har kay charan hirdai ur dhaar — hold the Lord's feet inside your heart. The feet stand for closeness to the One, the way a small child holds on to a parent's leg in a crowd.

Then comes a picture Gurbani loves: bhav saagar charh utreh paar — climb aboard and cross the world-ocean. The bhav saagar is the churning sea of life. The heart rooted in the One is the boat. Taking refuge does not mean running away from life. It is how you get across it.

A Question to Sit With

What is your "boat" — the thing that carries you steadily through rough times?
