Anchor All in the One and the World Can't Poison You

ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
man bach karam govind aDhaar.
In thought, word and deed, seek the Support of the Lord of the Universe;
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਛੁਟਿਓ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
taa tay chhuti-o bikh sansaar. ||3||
thus you shall be saved from the poisonous world-ocean. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In what I think, what I say, and what I do, let the One be my support.

And so I am carried safely past the parts of the world that would poison the heart.

Let the One anchor your thoughts, words, and deeds, and the world can't poison your heart.
The deeper layer

This one says: rest everything on the One, and the world cannot poison you.

Man bach karam govind aDhaar — in thought, word, and deed, the One is my support. Being whole in all three is a Gurbani ideal. What you feel inside and what you do outside line up.

Think of a tent with three strong poles. If all three stand on firm ground, the wind cannot knock it over.

Standing like that, a person is chhuti-o bikh sansaar — freed from the bikh, the poison, of the world. That means the parts of life that eat away at a heart with nothing to hold on to.

A Question to Sit With

Do your thoughts, words, and actions usually point the same way — or pull apart?
