The Mind Clears When Given Something Sweet to Hold

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਸਾ ਮਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਹੀਅਤ ਧੀਰ ॥
saa mat nirmal kahee-at Dheer.
Pure and steady is that intellect,
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਪੀਵਤ ਬੀਰ ॥੧॥
raam rasaa-in peevat beer. ||1||
which drinks in the Lord's sublime essence. ||1||

In plain words

An intellect becomes clear and steady when it drinks in the sweetness of the One — like tasting something so good it settles you completely.

That taste has a way of cleaning the mind and calming it.

The mind grows clear not by force but by being given something sweet enough to rest in.
The deeper layer

Here the numbered verse ||1|| opens and the Rahao follows. Saa mat nirmal — "pure and steady is that intellect" — but note which intellect: the one that has drunk the raam rasaa-in, the sublime essence of the One. In Gurbani, tasting the divine is a favorite image because a taste convinces you in a way arguments never can. The mind is not made pure by force but by being given something better to rest in. Beer here suggests deep, brave, steady drinking-in.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so good that, once you've tasted it, everything else settles into place?
