Verse 3 of 5

Fill the Heart With Love and Harm Finds No Root

ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਨ ਪਾਪੁ ॥
so tan nirmal jit upjai na paap.
Pure is that body, in which sin does not arise.
ਰਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥੨॥
raam rang nirmal partaap. ||2||
In the Love of the Lord is pure glory. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A heart stays clean and light when nothing harmful is allowed to take root and grow in it.

Soaked in love for the One, a life carries a pure kind of glow.

Fill the heart with love, and there's no room left for harm to take root.
The deeper layer

So tan nirmal jit upjai na paap — "pure is that body in which wrongdoing does not arise." The image is agricultural: harm is something that sprouts (upjai) in a heart, or fails to, depending on what fills the soil. Fill it with raam rang, the color of love for the One, and there is no room for the other thing to grow. Partaap — a pure glory or radiance — is the natural glow of such a life. This is prevention by fullness, not by fighting.

A Question to Sit With

When your heart is full of something good, do you notice the smaller, meaner feelings have less room?
