Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Colored through and through with loving devotion to the Keeper of the world, my heart asks for one humble thing.
Only the dust of the path the seekers walk — the gift of their good company.
The closing signature. Paraym bhagat raatay — "dyed in loving devotion" (dyeing is a favorite Gurbani image: the color soaks all the way through). And what does such a heart ask for? Not power or riches, but saadh ravaal — "the dust of the feet of the holy." Asking for the dust is an image of deep humility: the seeker wants only to be near the seeking, to walk where seekers walk. This is empty-handedness — asking for nearness, not reward.
If you could ask for just one thing to keep your heart pointed the right way, what would it be?
