Devotion Is Your Face Lighting Up in Love

ਭਰਤਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਜਿਉ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
bhartaa paykh bigsai ji-o naaree.
As the wife is delighted upon beholding her husband,
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
ti-o har jan jeevai naam chitaaree. ||1||
so does the Lord's humble servant live by chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the person they love most walks through the door, someone's face lights up with joy.

In the same way, a servant of the One comes alive by keeping the Name in mind.

Devotion feels like your whole face lighting up when someone you love walks in.
The deeper layer

Loving the One feels like your face lighting up when someone you love walks in.

This is the first of three pictures of love from home life. The verse uses the joy of a wife when she sees her husband. The key word is bigsai, to blossom. The face lights up and the whole person comes alive.

Ti-o har jan jeevai naam chitaaree — in the same way, the One's servant lives by keeping the Name in mind. Guru Arjan teaches by pointing at loves we already know. That same aliveness, turned toward the One, is what devotion feels like. A big idea becomes warm and easy to recognize.

A Question to Sit With

Whose arrival makes your heart lift the moment you see them?
