Verse 5 of 5

The Words Worth Speaking Are the Ones the Creator Accepts

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਕਥਨੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
kaho naanak saa kathnee saar.
Says Nanak, that speech alone is excellent,
ਮਾਨਿ ਲੇਤੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੯੪॥੧੬੩॥
maan layt jis sirjanhaar. ||4||94||163||
which is approved by the Creator Lord. ||4||94||163||

In plain words

The only words truly worth speaking are the ones that ring true to the One who made everything.

Let what I say be the kind of speech the Creator would nod at.

The words worth speaking are the ones the Creator accepts — in everyday terms, real, kind, and honest.
The deeper layer

The words worth speaking are the ones the Creator accepts.

This is the closing verse. Kaho naanak saa kathnee saar — says Nanak, that speech is excellent. Which speech? Maan layt jis sirjanhaar — the speech that the sirjanhaar, the Creator, accepts.

This sets a quiet standard for words. Not clever words. Not showy words. Words that are true in a deep way. Think of the difference between a loud ad and a friend telling you something real.

The whole shabad has tasted what is real. Now it asks that even our talk carry some of that, instead of empty noise. The verse names the standard but does not spell out what is in it. Taking it to mean speech that is real, kind and honest is one everyday way to live it out.

A Question to Sit With

Before you say something, how could you check whether it's the kind of words worth speaking?
